What Are L Numbers

They are given to loricariids that have not been taxonomically described. Some may have very vague common names, so most people just use the L-numbers for sake of ease. But keep in mind that L-numbers can be used for an entire species of fish, not just a particular one.

you're probably right, but I suppose the new person could be from US and confused that so many are using L for Litres.

Beryl you will see at least 2 kinds of L numbers here as the last posters said. If what you see looks like L023 it is the ID number for a fish. If what you see is something like "I have a 60L with real plants" you are looking at a reference to liters. For a quick conversion to units I understand I figure 4 liters to the gallon. I know that's not really close but it gives me a feel for how big is the tank somebody is talking about. For an american posting you will also see reference to a 20L or a 20H, both are 20 gallon tanks but the L is long and the H is high or tall. That is when the L gets really confusing because we put Ls on tanks that are measured in gallons. The only way to sort that out is to ask or to know which tank displacements come in a long type configuration.
