Going away tomorrow, staying over til Sunday evening, so that's approx five feeds the fish will miss - are weekend food blocks any good? Wilkinsons has one for £1? I would ask someone to feed the fish but they're away this weekend too!

unless you're going away for more than a week or so then the fish will cope without food. they don't usually eat every day in the wild.

i wouldn't use weekend feed blocks
the cause more trouble than what
they are worth i used the once
it took me a week to sort
my tank out afterwards

OK, no no feeding them? They've been in the tank almost 2 weeks and have been fine. Just a quick question - just replaced some water and my filter (when turned back on) spurted out a stream of very dirty looking water, I'm terrified the colony's been destroyed :S

did you use a dechlorinator
when you did your water change
also how long as the tank been
up and running eg cycled for

What did you do to the filter exactly?

Its quite usual to get debris coming out of the filter when put back on,it will soon clear,as long has you havent rinsed it in tap water or squeezed the media out to much then your colony should be fine.

Don't worry about feeding your fish while your away they'll be fine for a few days :good:

Dont worry about the spurt of gunk. Lots of filters do this when you turn off and on again. Most of you bacteria colony will be on the filter media rather than the gunk.

For feeding, as mentioned above, a couple of days is fine. I've left mine for up to a week without food without issues - some say even two weeks is ok although I'd never push that far.

Your fish will be fine for a few days. I have in the past left fish for 2 weeks and had no casualties without feeding. I wouldn't go beyond that though.
