Water to deep?

I filled my new aqarium allmost all the way up, so that the water level is slightly above the bottom of the black plastic rim at the top of the tank.

I did this because my water leaves a mineral deposit ring, and I would rather have it up on the rim, instead of on the glass.

This is in a 55gal tank with a Regent 30-60 power filter. which means that the water returning to the tank does not splash off the lip of water outlets. as it would at a lower level, but silently drops about 1 1/2" into the tank.

My question is, could this water level be too high?

Is there some advantage into having the water actually fall into the tank, so that it splashes more?

Also, what is the best way to remove mineral deposits?

yes water splashing onto the surface of the water creates movement which in turn creates bubbles which= oxygen for your fish, which means happier fish

as to remove mineral deposits from the inside of the glass get a magnetic algae scraper and clean as part of your usual routine

If your water level needs to be lower than tha edge of the trim for whatever reason - esthetics, water agititation, etc. - then electricians black insulating tape can be used to 'extend' you trim.

I use this on a couple of my tanks without top trim or hood so that the edge of the water is concealed, just to make it look nicer.

HTH, Eddie

P.S. The tape goes on the outside of the tank :p :kira:

hhhhmmm, now couldn't she just add a small air stone to break up the water at the top of the tank. That's what I do....(I'm no expert, so get another opinion)

I have my 10 gallon in my bedroom and I cannot take that waterfall sound 24 hours a day and night....so, I fill my water all the way up to the very top of the tank so as to eliminate the water fall. BUT, I have a small air stone in my tank to bubble up and create air and bubbles for my baby angel. It seems to work for her and it's quiet.

Don't worry. Oxygen is being introduced through the filter regardless of how hard it splashes, movement through the filter and back out is all it needs, there is no necessity for a 'waterfall'. I keep my water levels high too, both for aesthetics and noise, never have problems.

Yeah, I was worried about how much noise my airstone would make. I really tried to not use one because I was afraid ALL airpumps were as loud as my Hagan brand one. But, I bought a small airstone and I use a Whisper airpump and I really don't hear much and I have the tank next to my headboard.

...when I didn't use an airpump and I filled my tank to the very top, my angel was gasping at the top of the tank for air. hhhmmm, I don't know. I'm sure every tank is a bit different. I don't think I can go without an airpump, though.

LOL...that waterfall noise was driving me bananas, so I know I can't reduce my water level. :fun:

Be carefull filling too much water though. my juwel came with a max fill level sticker. i presume this is down to the structual integrity of the tank. Any higher than this line and the tank will be above its normal structual limits (Thats the pilot in me coming out :D )
