HI all, day one results were:

ph 7.2
Ammonia 0.25
nitrite 0
Nitrate 0

It had been concluded that my tank hadn't started cycling yet (its 10 days old and has fish in)

day 2 (yesterday)

ph 7.6
Ammonia 0.5
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 0

I also tested my tap water which is PH 7.8 on the high PH scale.

I have added some duckweed to the tank.

I had been doing 20% water changes as I had a white cloudy bloom on about day 5, but I have ceased doing these now as I need it to cycle

Any comments? advice?

thanks :)

Cut down on the water changes, or it will take ever for the tank to cycle.

When cycling with fish you really do need to do frequent water changes like you are doing if you want your fish to live through it. Because with fish you will test for a few straight days and it will rise steadily then one day it can skyrocket from decaying poo and whatnot, better safe than sorry. It will take a long time to cycle but cycling always takes a while, if you can try to "seed" the tank with some gravel from an existing set up if you have any friends or family with a healthy system.

So I should continue with my frequent water changes?

I'm getting kinda confused because yesterday I was told to stop doing them...

I don't mind how lng it takes to cycle, as long as I can try and keep my fish alive! :)

Snaller one's are better, not an easy answer we all do it differently, some say get on with it as fast as possible to not stress the fish longer then needed, then some say keep doing water changes, best to keep an eye on the fish as that's the best way to do it, you can tell when they are stressed, or beginning to get stressed.

I would say that Wilder is giving you sound advice and we have all had different experiences as he states. I, from personal experience, would continue to test the water daily, or better yet twice a day, and do changes as needed, only small ones tho 15-20%.

if it were my tank id carry on doing a 10% daily water change unless you have too many fish in the tank. i also wouldnt bother testing the tabk everyday. just test it after a week. after the second week you should be in a position to add another fish, maybe two. and then only do a 10% water change every two or three days

The fish all seem very happy, fins up bright colours and confidently using all the tank to swim.

I will continue doing small water changes then, and i'll get more readings sunday night :)

Thanks everyone, I know everyone does things a bit differently, and I am very appreciative of everyones opinions and advice :)

Abit off topic...
I just looked at your sig and noticed your stocking.
I dont think guppys like being alone, try and get him some buddies.

HI,

He did have some buddies, as noted in another thread, and this one is the only one that survived.

I was in a quandry as to wether I should get some more, and face losing more, or wait until my tank is right.

I know I should have never got any now, but as usual it's too late.

*tip of the day* Don't do a water change when theres a good film on...I only just noticed the tank was full in the nick of time! lol

Don't add anymore fish that was bad advice, all you do is make things worse and lose more fish.

nahh that tank will take many more fish than 6. after two weeks it'll be safe to raise the bio load. on a tank thats already been cycled it'll be fine to add one or two
