I have tried searching, but I am either blind, or there is not much of a writeup of different water sources.
As I posted before, my tap water has a pretty high amount of ammonia in it, so I started testing other water sources. The best I found in regards to ph levels (mine was at 8.0-8.2) and ammonia levels was the water from my bf's parent's house out in the country.
They use well water that has been softened through their system and has no ammonia, nitrites or nitrates, and has a ph of 7.6-7.9.

Is softened well water safe for a tropical tank?

We live in a hard water area. I simply use Aqua Plus, a liquid tap water conditioner when doing water changes and I've had no problems at all. It's not that expensive and lasts a long time per bottle, many doses per bottle. I'd try that to be extra safe. There are several different brands on the market. :)
