Water Level

Depends what your stocking if you have any labyrinth fish then a few inches but if not half an inch should be ok.

I think its whatever eventually works for you individually. I know that I like to be free to plunge my entire arm in whenever I want to, lol, and don't want that to get the level too high. Over the years, despite liking the look of rimless tanks, I've come to like the reaonably wide top rims because I can just barely "disappear" the water line behind them but still have wave/spash space below my evaporation cover. But more or less anything goes, really. Getting hardness marks from minerals in the water is a consideration. Oh, and have you ever seen the "Paludarium" category in the various aquascaping contests? There's one under the "Aquascaping Contest" link on the Aquatic Gardeners Association home page.
