right im gonna tell u this coz i feel angry with myself:

right we have had a really ill dwarf gourami, and he started with big ulcers on his body, we treated him and he peeked up all healed over, but then he developed fluffy bacteria around his mouth; and his body started to bulge again and he was covered in at least five really big big holes on his side, then we treated again, but fluffy stuff was growing on top! one morning ma mum came down and the tetras and all other fish were eating it alive....
so my mum took it out but didnt know wat to do with it...............................................she put it in a bag??? (dont ask me y), i came down and saw it! i asked how long it had been there, (an hour) but still after an hour it was still gasping! i was disgusted so i just tipped it in a big glass container with water in it; now i hadnt a clue wat to do.........so we left it to die, now i no tis was wrong and very unpleasent for the fish, but was there something we cud of done....how do u kill them to put them out of pain? :-( :-( :-( i was very sad and angry with myself as i didnt know wat to do... :(

i've been told before to put them out of they're misery get a bowl of v cold water, stick a load of ice in or something and put them in and the cold will kill them instantly. Humane way of putting them down. Ian say's thats not right hto it just sort of puts them in a coma and they then die slowly.... not sure who's right though?

yh. it was horrible just seeing him spurtling out bubbles and dieng slowly.... :-( iv heard of clove oil but dont know wat it is or how to use it, i was thinking of putting lots of medicine in a glass and blocking off the top, as its a labyrinth fish they can take air out from the water and just basically overdose the fish, but i couldnt bring my self to it

yeah i bet it was, i'd have been well upset.

don't blame yourself too much though...... we don't all know what to do all the time and at least your finding out for next time. Some people just wouldn't care.

yeah clove oil, thats what Ian said when we discussed this the other day, at a guess you'd separate the fish into another tank/bowl or something add some clove oil to the water and that'd kill it. Not 100% though.

thnaks, im gonna try and consentrate on my new tank, and the fish that are alive in the other 1! thnaks again

Placing tropical fish into cold water is not a good way to euthanise a fish and certainly not quick for them, being cold blooded ice crystals will form in their blood which rip their insides to pieces and cause internal haemoraging long before they are dead.

The two most acceptable ways of euthanisation are a overdose in a clove oil solution, simply place the fish into a bowl of tankwater and add drops of clove oil to the water, after a few drops the fish will go into a dormant state and once this happens add the same ammount of drops again to overdose the fish and it will be dead within a few minutes.
The other way is to either destroy the brain in one quick movement by smashing it to bits with a heavy object (rolling pin, brick etc) or by removing the head in one motion using a very sharp knife.

fair enough, i wasn't sure about it myself, just reporting what I'd been told. I'll make sure I never take that piece of advice! :)

i told my mum to smack it with a rolling pin but not one of us cud do it, iv headr about the knife method on animals or suming like that were u cut them with a really sharp knife kwikly and by the tme the pain kicks in there already out 4 the count, thanks cfc for that generous post! lol
