Hi, thinking of adding a UV Steralizer to my tropical community tank - its a Fluval Shaker 252. are these a good idea & anyone have any recommendations? basically water is going green every couple of days after cleaning. have turned the lighting down & ensured no sunlight etc.

I use a Green Killing Machine periodically in my 200 litre. It is a 24w UV...you can get 3w and 9w versions too at Aquacadabra (they seem to be the only UK stockists of them)

Water is crystal clear...added benefit, no illness or disease in the fish for years and years.

Expensive as an initial investment but they last a very long time, replacement bulbs are easy to get via same company. They do not need to be used 24/7, 365 days a year...mine goes on once a month for 24 hours. Very slim build so is not overly visible in the aquarium.

Picture of the tank?
How long is the light on for?
Do you fertilise the aquarium?
Do you have any/ many live aquatic plants in the tank?

I wouldn't waste my money on a UV steriliser unless there was a major issue with disease, and that can be treated in other ways, just like green water can.

Have lots of live true aquatic plants in the tank.
Reduce lighting if necessary.
Cut back on plant fertiliser for a few weeks.
