Used Filter Media

Hi, Could anyone inform me of the best way to introduce used filter media to a new tank.

I normaly put it in with the new filter media in the filter.

I think you can also float or sink it in the tank.

If its the same type as the new filter takes, then just replace some new with the old, failing that you may be able to pack it on there somewhere ?
If your old stuff is soft (sponge etc) then just give it few good squeezes near the filter intake - the bacteria will soon set up shop !

Dont forget to feed the new filter, if there are no fish present....
