well as the title suggests i'll be upgrading from my 29 gallon very shortly to a 75 gallon long tank. I plan on moving the inhabitants that are currently in the 29 gallon into the new tank so I should have a decent amount of option for further stocking. Also i've never set up a tank that large as well a not having setup a new tank in some years, the 29 gallon has been running for atleast 4 years. I'd like to hear your opinions on the best way (and hopefully quickest, without sacrificing or putting the fishes wellbeing at risk) to go about cycling the tank. Theres a lot of information on google but the information varies a lot and I think I trust the opinions of people on this forum more than I do random articles on google. I'd also like to hear your opinions for the best substrate, plants, and filtration in general. I wanted atleast a filter designed for a 150 gallon tank, but more is better, And I think I prefer the HOB variety so if anyone can suggest good powerful filtration for a 75 gallon that would be appreciated too. The fish that will be going in there are 3 juvenile albino bushy nose (one with LF), 1 adult LF bn, a "leopard" synodontis.. about 2''...about 5-6 kuhli loach..2 bamboo shrimp, and a 2'' raphael cat (which i'm debating donating to a good home).. Im going to have plenty of space so what do you guys suggest I get? I wanted some other sorts of nice spotted or striped pleco's. and id like a large top dwelling fish or two.. and maybe a small school of something.. Im just so undecided as what to get and there is so many options (i've recently been finding some VERY good stores here in south florida). Sorry to ask for so many suggestions it sounds like im pretty much asking you guys to set up my tank for me, and I kinda am. Ha. I know more or less what I want and what direction to go in just dont know exactly how. I know I want to make the tank look as natural as possible.. Again im open to any and all suggestions. Thanks in advance..

I'd upgraded tank and tranfered fish twice with success. From 20g to 50g then 120g. I just caught them all with a net and put them in pails. Transfered the substrate first to new tank, then added half of the water from old tank, then added the fish.

Add the Ornaments from the old tank as well as theyre suppose to hold a little beneficial bacteria as well, even tho most of them will be inside your filter. Then just add dechlorinated water (similar temp)to your new tank to fill it up. im guessing u already know to use only tank water on your filter media. Then you can have it running.

About filtration I would personally suggest external/canister filter. I have Rena XP3 running at the moment and planning on adding a Fluval FX5. It is recommended to have 10X water turnover on your filtration, especially for messy fish such as plecos.

As for Tankmates Gouramis for top, and tiger Barbs for schooling fish will work with the syno, BN pleco n kuhli loaches as Ive tried it before. Not too sure with the Shrimp tho. Im guessing the raphael cat will be fine with them as well tho. If you wanna be safe, check your water stats for the next few weeks after setup. Theres prolly gonna be more advice/suggestions coming from diff members here. Good Luck with your tank.

Cheers.

I thought about doing it like that.. but I don't know it seems a bit crude and i've always read so much about the importance of cycling a tank. I don't wan't to risk the well-being of my fish by taking any shortcuts. I'd need a little more assurance from other members that that method would be ok. I don't feel too good about tiger barbs either as ive had really bad experience with them and my longfin BN's. I had to take a group of 7 back to the LFS cause they ate up the albino LF's tail really bad and its still healing from that ;\ I wanted a somewhat large.. slower-moving type fish for the top.. Since I have a big tank I kinda wanna have atleast one large fish. and maybe a school of something. I plan to get atleast 2 or 3 more different types of plecos.. not sure what kind.. nothing that grows larger than 8.. i really thinki wan't a green phantom and they sell them at an lfs nearby. and I think after that I should avoid getting more bottom dwellers.. but im not really sure as ive never dealth wit a tank this size.. im so used to having my options limited. And the LFS around where I live have a HUGE variety.. i could pretty much get anything.. i just dont know what ;x

If you use the same filter over in the new tank, as well as substrate, water, ornaments etc then cycling shouldn't be needed.
Obviously you'll want a new, bigger filter as well, and I don't think HOB hack it on tanks that big. Definetly go for a external cannister filter. Most brands are good, e.g. Eheim, Fluval, AquaManta, Rena.
Don't know on fish stocking.
Plants wise, just go for one t8 bulb that runs the length of the tank. Have it on for 8hours a day. Shouldn't need to dose CO2 or nutrients. Choose hardy plants such as Java fern, Anubias, Amazon swords, crypts etc.
