Im thinking of adding a couple of pieces of decent sized rock as the centre piece of my tank (Red Jasper or Red Vein Sandstone) and was wondering if anyone knew of the best places to sources these? Can you get them from LFS or is a garden centre better?

I know that Unipac do small pieces (egg sized/1kg) but Im after a couple of pieces something about 8"x7"x5". It doesnt have to be those exact measurements but I provided those to give a rough idea of the size. It also doesnt have to be those rocks but something red or redish as I have a clay effect background and wanted it to look like a boulder fall.

If im not able to source the rocks my next idea is to get a terracotta pitcher from the garden centre and smash it in half and use the largest, whole piece as a centre piece.

garden centres are a good source, also if you have a good aquatic store (such as maidenhead aquatics) nearby they usually have rocks for sale. Many garden centres also have aquatic centres as well.

If you go to one of the garden centres that also sells pond and water feature supplies, they should sort you out. I got cobbles and smooth rocks from B&Q

or just go to the nearest river ;)
and break the law and destroy the habitat of other creatures... sensible that. take one rock out and it has a knock on effect.

AE, TGM are online stores with rocks
garden centres
aquatic shops
stone merchants / builders merchants. (often cheaper, but you got to be careful what you get, and make sure its clean etc). i have just got 40 rocks from there, for £15. cant argue with that. im srubbing them, and will soak them for a few days in warm water.

I looked at some rocks but i was told they will increase the PH, they were in a fish shop though! Should I still use them or will it damage the fish?

what fish do you want to keepp in the tank?
what is the hardness and ph of your tap water? (test it)

how big is the tank? how much rock will you be using?

One rock out of river won't do that much damage, ive had to contact Env.Agency about taking rocks for my dissertation.

So i personally would say if you are to take rocks, take one. if you need to take more Env.Agency said 10m apart
