First off, as soon as my fish-in cycle is complete I'll be moving my fish and filter to a bigger tank.
Does this mean the cycle will start again? If so, should I just move everything sooner?
I'm currently housing my turtles in this tank so the lighting is a UV Exoterra light. Would this be harmful to the fish? Or is it okay to use this kind of light?

The other question is about the sand in my new tank.
It's been a few days now and it still hasn't settled, it's quite cloudy.
Will this clear up if I run my filter in there? Will the filter just take away all the really fine particles?

If you have turtles in a tank, you probably have a filter on it that could get your new one going quickly with a filter clone.

Each filter grows to a particular biological load based on the amount of ammonia that it processes. If it is moved to a new tank, the biological load it has grown to handle is not affected. If you are going to put more fish into the new tank than you would have been able to in the old tank, the filter won't be up to it at first. That means you could still add the fish that you would have added to the smaller tank and then just add the rest of your stock slowly over a few weeks.

A UV light is not appropriate for freshwater fish or plants. Only the bulb would need to be changed because there is nothing in particular about the rest of the fixture that wouldn't work with a new bulb.

Sand will settle in about a day or less, but if you failed to clean it first it could be weeks before the extra fine dirt that often comes with sand would settle. If you have a canister filter you could get away with running it when you have a lot of dirt floating in the water. If you have a hang on back type, examine it closely. Most of them pull unfiltered water right through the impeller before then moving it along to the filter elements. That means that you impeller will be exposed to the abrasiveness of the dirt if you run it on a cloudy tank.

Thanks for the info about the light and the sand.
I did wash the sand for about 2 hours before putting it in, maybe I didn't do it properly though.

As with the tanks, I'm currently doing a fish-in cycle in a 13 US gallon tank, with an Eheim 2213.
My turtles are housed in my 52 gallon tank. I'm giving the turtles away before the week is out and I'll be moving the fish from the 13 gallon into this tank and moving the Eheim 2213 to this tank as well.
I'm running an Eheim 2217 on the turtle tank which I'll be moving upstairs to my 110 gallon tank as soon as the turtles are gone.
(Sorry if this is long-winded and a bit confusing!)
I think 'waterdrop' told me I wouldn't be able to use the mature media from the turtles because of a disease he read about a while ago.
What do you think? Would I be able to rinse the media off and just set it up in my 110 gallon?
Or would it be better to cycle my new tank with new media? I have new media that I can use, I have ammonia on order and can start fishless cycling, although I would love to has this set up as soon as possible as I just can't wait any longer, I'm too excited!! :hyper:

I am far from expert on turtles. I do know they have a shell but that's about it. I recognize that WD reads more research than I do and would go with his thoughts on it.

Unfortunately I do not in fact have any specific information on whether mature media used with a turtle setup would really carry any more danger than mature media from a cold water fish or tropical water fish setup. I may have simply been expressing the feeling that without knowing more, I would probably hesitate to trust that it was ok. Sorry!

ps. I wonder if Wilder or the others over in emergencies might have a clue?

Thanks WD.
I was just trying to get a second opinion. I think I'm going to use your idea anyway and start over. I think that would be a lot safer :).
I'll try again in the emergencies section before I do though, just in case anybody with experience might know.
Thanks again!
Chris
