So, my girlfriend really likes guppies and want to get her some to look at in my tank.
I currently have 3 male tuqoise dwarf gourami (newly introduced as of 5 hours ago) and 2 one inch BN Plecos (been in the tank for 4 or 5 days now.
The issue I'm having is, I'm reading conflicting information ... some say guppies and DWARF gouramis are good together, other sources say they do not go well as the gouramis will eat the guppies.
What do the fine people here have to say on the issue?

Additional info;
Tank is 90 gallons I'm running 2 canister filters (Rena Filstar xp3 = 380 got, hydor = 270 gph), tank is obviously fully cycled.

Most Gouramis prefer soft acidic water, while Guppies like their water so hard you could walk on it, so no Guppys and Gouramis dont make good tank mates.

What are your water parameters? Ph GH?

All fish bought from lfs (Big Al's) have been conditioned to our hard water here in Edmonton. So I don't think that will factor into things. I more concerned with, will my gouramis eat or kill the guppies?

I bet Big Al's told you that, well heres a tip Its nonsense, fish have evolved over thousands of years to live in certain conditions and now Big Al has found a secret way of conditioning them in in less than a few weeks?

Please feel free to give Big Al the link to this post so he can tell us what this miracle conditioning is.

Dwarf gouramis (Trichogaster lalius) will not normally attack or kill guppies but as Nick said, they come from different environments and require different water chemistry. If you keep guppies in soft water they don't do well.

In addition to this, dwarf gouramis are riddled with diseases including the Iridovirus and Tuberculosis (TB). Both of these diseases can live in fish for months before making an appearance and killing them. And any fish in a tank with dwarf gouramis can also catch those two diseases.

Guppies are best kept in single sex tanks with males only or females only so the males don't constantly harass the females. And they need hard alkaline water otherwise your wasting your time.

I didn't say a few weeks.. i dont know how long it takes but here's what I do know: the ph in the tanks at the store are the same as mine, as well as the hardness and temp. Another thing I know is this fish I bought from there were in that tank at the store for at least 3 weeks (cause I seen them about that long ago and I've been back to the store every other day since) and they didn't die. So whatever is being done I don't think the fish will die or fall ill due to water parameters ....as stated earlier, more so wondering if the dwarf gouramis will kill or eat the guppies. That is all.

why would these guys say it's all good to put them together...

Because they know nothing about fish keeping.

i dont know how long it takes
Evolution is slow, It would take at least a few hundred years

So in short, no its unlikely that Dwarf Gouramis would eat juvenile or adult guppies. They probably would eat baby guppies though but most fish would eat what they can fit in their mouths.

What has been said though is that whilst they would likely survive in the short term in your hard water tank, dwarf gouramis prefer more softer water so may not flourish in the long term. You may find tank-bred fish are more adaptable to changes in ph so they might be ok in water up to 7.5ph but it will depend where 'Big Al' has got his fish from.

It is also worth pointing out that, just because the fish have been in the tank for 3 weeks and they seem ok, doesn't mean that long term the conditions are right for them. Hopefully a decent lfs has a regular turnover of fish so what you keep going back to look at could be new stock of the same fish....
