I'll be upgrading my shell dwellers (neolamprologus multifasciatus) from their current 10 gallon tank to a 20 gallon long soon. They've been breeding and I think they'll appreciate the extra space.

Are there any other fish from Lake Tanganyika that would work as a top dweller in this tank? Maybe as a single or a pair? Or would I be better off keeping it species only, even though I'm doubling their tank size?

most African rift lake cichlids are bottom dwellers.
Cyprichromis and Paracyprichromis are open water fishes that could be used. They are schooling tho and need to be in groups. However, they only grow to 4 inches and are quite slim and don't eat heaps so might work.

Alternatively, Lamprichthys tanganicanus

Thanks Colin. I just looked those species up, and realized I should have a 20 gallon high if I want an open water fish with my shellies, instead of a 20 gallon long. I already have the tank. Looks like I'm keeping it a species tank. I'm kinda sad too, because I really want that Tanganyikan Killifish now.
