I started out with a tiny cup of Java moss from my LFS. I placed it on some spiderwood and it really took off! The tallest piece was 7 inches long! How do I trim this back and what do I do with the trimmings?

I feel ya! I started out with a 3in x 3in piece - i know have a 12in x 6 in mass!! (After trimming)

How do I trim this back and what do I do with the trimmings?
Use Aquascaping scissors. Trim it down to about 1 inch. You can throw away, or re purpose the trimmings. Right now, I'm clumping all of mine together in my 20g long, in the hopes that it will all become one giant mass.

Its what I do,..just use scissors...make a mat of j-moss,and then tie to another piece of wood. J-moss remember can crash..so you want to have some here and there.
I added Mag salts for some bloated fish...and my moss crashed a bit...water changes and its got new tips.
