Fish Crazy
Well, I have a bit of a problem. I've researched the tiger barbs, and they seem to be compatible with cory cats.. if in groups of 6 or more. Is this true?
Basically, to make a long story short, i'm rescuing 3 tiger barbs, and buying 3 more to flush out the shoaling. Basically, the ex-owner (I'll get them tomorrow) had a few problems with his tank, and has blamed the tiger barbs. It is either i adopt them when I purchase a 10 gallon tank (which the poor things are living in, at the moment) or they will die, ie be Euthanized for being an inconvience. Due to past events, the ex owner will not add the tiger barbs to his new 66 gallon tank, and he has no other tanks, as I'm buying his other running one from him tomorrow. Temporarily, I will establish a divided area within the tank I have (22.8 inches long.. a little short for tigers, but they'll have to manage for the time being..)
They will be in a smaller division until sunday, when I can purchase the three additional tiger barbs. They are in good condition, and have not been fighting amongst themselves. These tend to be peaceful, at least these three specific fish (as yes, I've seen them plenty before and watched them) and haven't bothered the balas or the gouramis that they were housed in.
With 6, will there be a problem with my 3 cory cats? The cory cats are all over an inch long -- the same size, if not larger than the tiger barbs in question. I could possibly go as high as 7 or 8 tigers if that will help the shoaling and prevent the tigers from picking on the cory cats. I could probably find somewhere to adopt the tiger barbs if need be, but the 3 are already over a year old, so I'm not sure if they are young enough for a LFS to take off my hands.
I just can't abide by and watch three tigers be euthanized just for the reason of the owner not wanting them in his tank.
Thoughts?
