I've just realised I threw an assassin snail in the bin today when I chucked out an old ornament and entirely forgot to check.

Is he likely to have survived outside? He/she was in a sealed binbag which was triple bagged containing moist substrate and other aquarium, so no general or household waste but in an outside bin in fairly cold temperatures for about 3 hours. Is there any chance he will have survived

I've managed to retrieve him and have him in a cup of aquarium water, my girlfriend reckons she saw him move but I'm not so sure, given it looks like just a shell its quite hard to tell.

In short could we have a Lazarus moment or are we terrible people?

Hmmm you may be ok, just think what the pest snails cope with when they come in on plants! They cope with all sorts and still infest your tank so fingers crossed. Let us know the outcome.

Fins and fins crossed for you, hopefully it will be OK.
I know what you mean though, I leave my waste water to settle in the bucket before chucking it, just to make sure no baby Assassins are in there!  Managed to save a few doing it this way.  The other morning when clearing away, there was an adult who would have come out of the tank with an ornament and had survived the night in the tiniest bit of cold water.  So here's hoping.

Well after less than ten minutes in his cup of water he is clearly alive, I feel like less of a terrible person and I'm genuinely surprised. Next question is he going to be ok to go back into a tank as normal, he is unlikely to introduce anything hideous into the tank.

I guess he shall now be known as Lazerus.

I closed down a tank and put it in my freezing conservatory with about a cm of water in it, no filter and no heater, and a few baby assassins which had been buried survived several days out there! Poor little sods.
