just got my new tank set up and need to start my fishless cycle, I have ordered a master test kit which should arrive in a few days.

I bought some ammonia today and for those of you from the UK, you can probably tell me if this stuff is ok? its jsut household ammonia from boots:

i was wondering if its ok to start adding ammonia before I get my test kit? i wont be able test the water for a few days but is it ok to start adding some ammonia now right?

How much should I add? about a teaspoon?

thanks!

this ammonia is fine to cycle a tank with. ive just done one with it :good: there is a calculator at the top that will tell you how much to add in accordance to the tank size :good:

You can add some ammonia now; it will take a good few days for any bacteria to start to grow, so it would be a waste to start testing too soon (apart from telling if your ammonia levels are right, but you can do that with the calculator anyway)

ok thanks, its a 35l tank, and ammonia solution is 9.5% so calc reckons 1.84ml, is that 1.84 per day?

You can do it daily or use the add & watch method which is better. Read the bigineers resource on fishless cycling & it explains the two methods in great detail.

That Ammonia is perfectly ok for the job. It is actualu the exact one I am using at the moment.

ok cheers, well its difficult to do the "add and wait" method cause i dont have my test kit yet, but I will just add 2ml now and see what the reading is when i get my tester in a few days :p
