Hi all.

I've had my 3ft, 110lts tank for best part of 20 years and I'm thinking of upgrading.

On the possibles list at the moment is the Juwel Rio 240 or Vision 260.

I know these have been around for a while and wondered what others thought of them or if anyone would recommend a different set up all together.

The set up will be for general community fish, and plants.

Thanks

Andrew

Hiya Andrew,
Not had either myself, but got a rio 240 for my mother

Fishless cycling started

Besides removing the stuck-in filter that comes with it it's as-is, the base colour is teak (or whatever the lightest colour option is)

The build quality of the tank is very very good, it's the black silicone version (not sure if you get a choice ? )

The build quality of the base is very good besides one niggling factor which i'll try to explain

The base is an absolute dream to build, everything is spot on and once built #40## stable, the only niggle to me is this, (rem this is the rio 240 base) ..............

As you look front on at the tank/base, there's a door each side and the space in the middle holds a shelf, nothing at all bad with this, but if you imagine the rear part which i shall call the "back support" , where the 2 vertical boards are which the shelf rests onto the "back support" is not fixed in anyway

The base is solid enough as said but for me i took a nice drillbit and drilled 2 holes on each vertical from the back (if that makes sense) then used very similar fasteners (for chipboard/mdf etc) and screwed them in, of course i drilled squarely

For me those 4 screws do add a bit more regidity

So for me tank-wise 10/10

Base-wise 9.5/10

(after my small 4 screw base mod 10/10)

Hope that helps

ps: It looks great with lights on with a sandy substrate

Have Fun

Tony

ps: I got an external allpondsolutions uv filter for it, it's the largest they do and was only £69.99 delivered (ordered sunday was here 10am tuesday (off bay link ;) )

Thanks for the reply Tony

I've been to a local shop today who display the complete range and after careful measuring I don't think I will get away with the 240/260 size as the tank sits in the space at the bottom of the stairs.

So I have management approval for the Vision 180, so just need to save up for a while!

I'm interested to note you have removed the internal filter, can I ask why? Is it no good?

Regards

Andrew

i'm gonna stick up for the Juwel internal, after upgrading the powerhead. I have had nothing but crystal clear water and good water stats. Although they do take up room, and people will tell you to get an external, i'm quite happy with my internal filter. They did get a bad rep back in the day when they were just sponge filters for the main reason that there wasn't much surface area for the good bacteria to grow. However they now come with a ceramic media box, so they do have a bigger surface area. You could also add a further media box if needed. So...its up to you when it comes to internals or externals, but i'll be keeping my internal.

I've got a Juwel Rio 240 litre on order. I'm a complete beginner and want to keep my 2 fancy golfish in it along with a shoal of white cloud mountain minnows. Talking of filters, would i need to upgrade from the filter that is included with the tank?

Hiya,
To answer the why remove the internal

With it removed and an external fitted obviouslt the filtration is out of sight

Also after reading reviews of that specific external and then the pricing and what you get included it was a no brainer for me, plus the real ease of cleaning made it appealing also just in this respect

To me anything that allows less messing around in the tank itself must be better for the critters living in it

As said i nor my mother have had a ready fitted filter so cannot comment on it either way

Also it does take a fair whack of space up and maybe if things progress i might make a 3d background before fish etc are added so obviously at least it would of needed to be moved, hence really it was easier to take out now rather than pretty 99% certain sometime in the future

Hope that clears it up

Tony

Thanks Tony

I can see your reasoning!

I think I'll give the internal a try whilst the bank balance recovers and maybe add an external later!

Andrew
