Hi,

I currently have the following in a 125L Fluval Tank

4 x Queen Loach
10 x neon tetra
5 x zebra danio

Ammonia : 0ppm
Nitrite : 0ppm
Nitrate : 40ppm

Temp in Tank : 26C

A Bit of Background!
Couple of days ago I noticed white grain spots on some of the fish who were also constantly rubbing on the sand substrate. I have treated them with Interpet Anti White Spot (2nd Dose is due on saturday).

Usually 3 of the Queen Loach are visible swimming around quite happily the other seems a little shy. Well today the shy one was out and about but looked really thin (compared to the other 3). I put some food in and the thin shy loach didn't seem bothered at all, there is also slight redding around the gills and seems to be lying in the bottom of the tank up a corner. It also seems like the gills are moving rapidly

Anyone got any suggestions? could it be from the whitespot?

Any help appreciated

Cheers

Lee

Yeah, when they are sick they tend to go off of their food like we all do. Try some live or frozen bloodworm it usually does the trick. But they are tough buggers so just keep an eye on him. He may just be a little weak aswell, was the food getting to the bottom?

I'm using Nutrafin Max food tablets for them. I usually put 2 in but the "alpha" loach seems to always chase them off, the thin one was eating a few of the fish flakes that were sinking a few days ago but haven't seen it eat recently

your nitrates are a bit on the high side, do some more partial water changes and get those down to 20ppm. some fish are going to be hardier to high nitrates than others!

also, there's a loach "skinny disease" out there, have a read of this from loaches.com:

if you google loach "skinny disease" plenty of other links come up too.

What test kit are you using?

Is there plenty of aeration in the tank.
Are you using the full dose of whitespot med. Sometimes you have to half dose with loaches.

How thin is the fish.
Is it possible to load a pic onto the site.

Has the fish lost weight due to not eating.
What does it look like when the fish goes to the toilet.
is the anus enlarged or red and inflamed.
Is the tummy sunken in.
Is the spine bending.
Does the fish swim on it's side.
Any worms prutruding from the anus.

Unfortunatly I Lost the Loach Today! - Feel a bit sad!

What test kit are you using? API Liquid Test Kit

Is there plenty of aeration in the tank.Using a Fluval U3 Filter On setting A With bubbles on surface
Are you using the full dose of whitespot med. Sometimes you have to half dose with loaches. I did use the full dose - how much of a problem could this cause? - It doesn't seem to have affected the other loachs

How thin is the fish.He was very thin approx. 1/3 the size of the others
Is it possible to load a pic onto the site.To Late :(

Has the fish lost weight due to not eating.I Think So, we tried feeding him last night with bloodworms - showed absoloutly no intrest
What does it look like when the fish goes to the toilet.
is the anus enlarged or red and inflamed.Nope
Is the tummy sunken in.Nope
Is the spine bending.Nope
Does the fish swim on it's side.It had done a few times yes, what causes this?
Any worms prutruding from the anus.Nope

Although I've now lost the loach it would be really helpfull if you could pass on any knowledge to avoid this happening in the future

Many Thanks for your replys

Lee

Bless him.
R.I.P.

Being really thin can be old age, internal parasites, fish tb, bacterial, fish isn't eating, not feeding enough, starvation.

Keep a look out for when your other fish go to the toilet.

A fish swimming on its side, can be injury, swim bladder, internal parasites, loss of an eye, bacterial.

I've done 2 25% water changes today and the loaches seem more active still haven't eaten yet tho

This is how they looked earlier

Soak his food in garlic juice to stimulate appetite and boost the immune system.

Let me know how he gets on once the whitespot gone.
