Hi all
I just bought a yellow spotted pleco to live in the bottom of my cichilid tank, I put him in a few days ago and only seen him once since, I know he's in there I think he lives under a large tree root.
He wont feed with the other fish, I put pleco wafers in for him but worry he is not getting enough food as the firemouths etc seem to like them as well, and eat them. Can he get enough food from the scraps left in the gravel when I presume he comes out at at night, is this normal for a plec? and any thoughts on the best way to feed him.

if you soak the wafers in the aquarium water, before you let go, they will become heavy and sink to the bottom quicker. this will give the firemouths less time to get them and will give your plec more chance of getting the food. just a suggestion.

I turn my light off atleast once a day a few mins after feeding. The plec will be feeding but it doesn't like bright lights. If you turn the tank lights off and keep the room lights on, it should come out and explore so you will be able to see it.

Thanks guys for puting my mind at rest, and the feeding tips

I've got a golden nugget plec which I hardly ever saw... Had it maybe 4 months, and until yesterday had never seen him eat. I fitted some moonlight cold-cathode tubes the other day - and with them on at night, and the main light off, the plecs coming out more and more...

If your tanks big enough, I'd definitly get a set - and feed the pleconce these are on and the main lights out.

Also, try some veggies - mine appears to like sweet potatoe (although that may have been the loaches) and carrot, zucchini and lettuce are also suposed to be good... boil them or zap them in the mirowave for a few seconds first (if boiling for a minute or so, add a bit of garlic to the water... ;))

I usually feed my pleco in his spot that he spends the day in until night comes then he will eat with the light on but found he could get the food better without the other fish eating it when the tank and room lights are out so the other fish can't see where he and the food is. I have had to have the lights off more recently since I added more tetras to the tank.
