Anybody know how to test rocks for ph adjusters, etc....

I'm going down to the river (about 1/2 a mile from me. :) ) to find some nice rocks, but I don't want them to affect the ph. :(

Scratch the rock and drip vinegar on it. If a reaction occurs, high pH. Not sure if this is always relaible, though.

do you have a nitrAte test? if so, you can use bottle #1 instead of vinegar to carry out Temptestuousfury's method. :) (it's hydrochloric acid....)

failing that, get a bowl of water, test the pH, leave the rocks in it overnight, test the pH again, see if it's changed. :)

oh, and clean all rocks you find very thoroughly, and make sure they dont look to have metal in them. :)

I collected my rocks (some flat just so I could make caves. ;) ).

Now I just have to figure out where test solution 1 for nitrate walked off to, since I don't have any vinegar.

I know boiling is a good option for cleaing, how long should they boil for?

Thanks,

Alright, I have 3 rocks to boil for 20 minutes. :) I haven't tested the rest yet.
