Depends what you mean by slime ? do you mean like a white film? If so, yeah that pretty normal for new wood, it's harmless just gross. You could take it out and clean it if you wanted to

I had green, slimy algae stuff...took it out and scrubbed it under a running tap and put it back in the tank....no fish at that point...

Yes, the slime is normal for new driftwood. You can scrub it off or just let it be.

Driftwood snot, harmless, will go away on it's own, eventually.
