Rainbowfish will eat anything small enough to fit in their mouth. But they also moderate how much of each food they eat. If they have duckweed or other small fine leaf plants to eat, they will pick at this n that and graze on plants when they want them. If you give them vege flakes or goldfish flakes instead of a high protein tropical flake, they eat fewer plants.
I used Duckweed because it was small and if grown under a coverglass, the leaves become really soft and the fish love them. If you don't have a cover on the tank, get one because rainbows jump.
