My thermometer on the side of the tank is saying 30c (86f), the heater is only set to 26c (79f). One of.my rainbow fish has ick so I was advised to raise the temperature slightly, I put it on 27c (81f). My fish looked really ill this morning so I turned the heater back down. I have already lost 2 ottos and 1 rainbow fish.

Please help

What another 2 or 3 days and if it hasnt gone down by then turn the temp down to 22c. Because you need to let it get to the right temperature, you cant put it down and think it will change in a few hours.

You can just buy the ick treatment, its much easier.

The thermometer may actually be broken and not reading right. Or the heater may be broken and just never shutting off. (I've had both happen)
So I'd grab a second thermometer just to verify which one is the problem (as that's cheaper than buying a new heater :p)If the water really is that hot and than heater is broken or if the water is 27 and the thermometer is broken) Fix whichever is the problem (Buy a new thermometer or heater, whichever is broken)

If the water really is that hot, turn the heater off and if you want the temp. to go down more quickly add a water bottle of ice to the tank, I do that in the summer for my betta tank. (But keep an eye on the thermometer so you know when to take the bottle of ice out)

As for the ick, continue to treat it, but get this problem sorted out, as it will only stress your fish out more if the temperature changes to much in to short a time. You are indeed supposed to raise the temp to help cure ick but raising it too high will only harm your fish more.

I found some treatment in my cupboard called anti white spot plus - cures white spot parasite disease. I measured out the correct amount of medication for my tank and I've added it. It's turned the water a strange blue colour

it does that is normal i think they put a dye in it, also remember to take out any carbon in your filters :)

Water test;
Ph-7.2
Ammonia-0
Nitrite-0

Why are my fish dying?

Neither your heater nor your thermometer are broken. The dial on heaters is often not very accurate just just keep adjusting your heater until the temperature on your thermometer is where you want it.

Your fish are dying because they have ick - just keep treating it.
