My tank doesnt smell very nice

I cant really describe it, it just smells..!!

Do you think the water might need changing? (did it on saturday)

do i have to change the whole filter??

its only 5 weeks old

Might not need to change the filter, but giving it a good cleaning might help. You might also want to check the hood/lid area--I've found that food sometimes falls into the lip of a tank, gets moist, and starts rotting--nasty, but doesn't impact the tank at all.

I'd also do a quick count, make sure all the fish are accounted for--jumpers usually don't smell, but you never know. Short term, running carbon will reduce the odor, but I think it's important to determine why there is an odor and address that issue as well.

i change my filteres every month

and do like a 25% water change every week or so and its fine for me :)

OK i'll clean the filter and change the water (clean the filter in the old tank water right??)

Also the carbon is out because i'm using melafix to heal one of the angels tails (it got nipped)

All the fish are definitely there

I found that myanks have a smell to them...i think its only natural and they will always have a faint smell to them...proper maintenance and care will make it less noticeable.

Gravel, that's great! Same as you.

As for the smell, have you cycled the tanks beforehand?

How small/big is the tank?

How many fishes do you have in this tank?

Have you checked the water parameters?

Put a peg on your nose :p

its all cycled

i had to do it with my fish in cos i didnt know... :look: but they are all ok and its done now

Since there's nothing I can do to check on you, I'll have to take your word on it. Just keep checking that your water quality is fine, and don't forget to keep doing your water changes. It should dampen the smell.

PS Please don't be afraid to ask for advice. :)

My tank water started to smell a bit stangant, I finally worked out that the roots and lower stems of the plants I had bought in pots had started to rot in all the cotton wooly stuff they come packed in in the plastic pots

After I took them out and swapped them for some unpotted plants, a few water changes got rid of the smell :)
