Before I start can I just give a quick hello to the group!

At the moment I have a Jewel tank with the following fish in it:

5 marble mollies
5 male tuxedo guppies
10 neon tetras
5 ghost glass catfish
1 red tailed black shark
1 male fighting fish

We have had conflicting advice on whether Angelfish could be suitable tankmates to the rest of our fish. Can any of you tell us?
Also, I would love some dwarf puffers (awww, there so cute! :p ) but could they be too small a fish for this tank?

Any advice would be welcome and I look forward to posting again!!

Cheers! 8)

that is about 60-65 gallons. way too many fish. you have to take the full grown size of the fish and allow roughly one gallon of water per every inch of fish. you have to also allow for the area the gravel takes up in the tank also.

sorry to burst your bubble.

The Dwarf puffers are cute little guys, but definately NOT recomended for a community tank, some people have good luck with theirs, but the Dwarfs in most posts I've read (as well as my own little pack :D ) are notorious nippers and will shred the fins and tails of most of your fish.

....oh, Hello to you to and Welcome to the forum, hope you enjoy yourself :D

You haven't burst my bubble! :D
In the U.K. we seem to get massively conflicting advice on how many fish are suitable for owners tanks compared to what you are told in the U.S.

I have relatively few fish compared to some people I know that shop at the same aquarium store i go to. And I have whats considered to be a very large tank in the UK. Bearing in mind our houses are about an eighth the size of yours in the U.S. a 240 litre tank takes up alot of room!!

There are alot of rules of thumbs and everyone seems to quote a different one each time. I have always followed expert advice of the people who run the fish store and they are always very careful about selling fish to people without knowing each individuals tank set ups. You even have to take down a water sample from your tank each time you want to purchase any fish to make sure your water quality is top notch. No shopping at 'Walmart' here.

I simply wanted to know about suitable tank mates and would never want to get into a debate about 'overstocking' as it is a fruitless topic. However I respect your opinion and it has been noted ;)

Thanks pufferpack for the welcome! Looks like I will have to get another tank if I want puffers! Any excuse will do....... :D

Wow, you certainly have more caring shopkeepers over in the UK. Most of the ones I talk to here in Calgary have recomended Dwarf Puffers for community tanks, and only 2 have asked me what I planned to put the fish I bought in with (I was buying cichlids both times). The only time the lfs here want to see a water sample is if you bring back a dead fish. One fellow even sold me some "Parasite Catfish" under the name "Blue Loach Cat"...they went back as soon as I found out what they were.

...if you do look at getting a tank for Dwarfs (I recomend them highly) the Hexagon tanks work well for them as the little guys are all over the place, and they can be tucked into a tighter spot in your home. :D

no problem. sounds like you have a great lfs there. wish that some of the lfs here were as conscientious. they don't care what you are adding to what or how the water is.

great way to look at it that it is an excuse to get another tank. guess your houses are small i got an 85 gallon in the living room, a 180 in the basement and various 30 and 40 tanks throughout the house.

sorry for being rude, welcome to the forum! forget my manners sometimes.

phishfood,

First.........WELCOME to the forum. Hope you are finding it helpful.

Next,

In answer to your question about angelfish and your current tank residents..............The only potential problem I see could be the male fighter (betta).

These sometimes will mistake angels or any fish with long finnage as another betta and start fighting with it.

Keep in mind this is only my opinion and not gospel.

Thanks for the replies and the welcomes :D

I have been told before that Angels would sometimes attack tetras. But upon reading peoples comments
it looks as tho we will pass over getting both angels and the puffers!

So far I've found the forums extremely interesting. Keep up the good advice guys!

hi phish nice to have you abord i wish the guys in my fish shop where as good as ures. i dunno how big glass catfish get but i recon thats a big tank. i have been thinking about tank size and what i could put in my yank and on the whole i would admit that i have thaught allot about some of the stocking size advice ive been given on here. i can agree that many of the fish i choose are too big for the tank i own 135 litre 4 foot (i think) as they grow big bit a while back i was told not to get a red tailed black shark. and some people go purely on the amount in gallons rather than the shape (like talking about putting big cats in hex tanks). i might have read some of this somewhere else or perhaps i dream some of it but im shure i used to have a red tailed shark and a plec and a pair of firemouths a beta (siamese fighting) pair and probably a bunch of other fish all in a smaller tank much smaller and nothing bad happened. i now live by thease new rules to plan on the stocking of my tank... bigger tank and im not going to get as many fish... i think il move or get confuzed.

i was atracted to the puffers when i first saw them, so cute like u said but there were a little info on the fish beside the price and it sad not for community tank cause they nip
