Hi, i am a semi experienced/ experienced tropical fish keeper i have had tanks in my family home for 5 years but am now going off to my second year of uni. Last year i really missed my fish, however i now have a house at uni that we allow me to have a fish tank so i am currently in the process of finding and buying a new tank to take to uni probably around 80-100lts. As a have kept tropical fish for a long time i have experienced a lot of the basic tropical fish like guppies mollies platies corydoras plecos some barbs black phantoms harlequins fighters and rummynose etc. and am now looking for something a bit different with my new tank so was wandering if anyone had any ideas of what i could get for my tank fishwise and quantities i would also like some live plants so if anyone had any suggestions for them.
Thanks in advance

Fish im not experienced enough to comment on. As youd know the guys on here will want to know your water parameters.

Plant wise im in love with my Ozelot Sword. It was on its own in the shop and unlabelled... Havent seen one since. Its sooooo cool.

I also like my bacopas (ive got two differeent types but couldnt tell you what... Again they were unlabelled)

My fish like my crypt more than i do, same with my anubias nanas but theyre good sturdy plants.

I also think the grasslike plants that will carpet your awuarium over time are pretty cool.

Accept your strengths and weaknesses. Im rubbish at doing things neatly, so im just letting my plants grow with little guidance or pruning for now... Going for a rather wild look and i like it :) its very marmite though... My friends either hate it or love it. Those who hate it just thinks its lazy and messy... Which it is...

for the fish, what type are you interested in, colors and the actual type, etc
Water Parameters as well before I can really suggest any kind of fish...
As for plants, will you be using ferts, pressurized Co2, Co2 boosters (a fert)?

nice thank you i will have a look at those plants

My water parameters are hard water and a ph of 7-8

im not sure how to really use plants as i have never used them before

and as for fish im open to any suggestion but would like some colour

Guppies and endlers are small enough to live comfortably in a 80-100 litre tank, and would live well in your water. if you're more interested in a school, try harlequin rasboras. Some plants I'd recommend are vallis, cryptocorynes, anubias, java fern, hygro, and different types of sword plants (my water is very similiar, these plants I listed grow well). If you look up something similiar to "planted aquarium", you'll find tons of inspiration.

I started in the same position. So i bought plants that looked cool and stuck em in the substrate. I have a timer than keeps the tank lights on for 8 hours a day. Thats as high tech as it goes. Some planta work, some plants dont. All the ones i listed work fine in my tank :) if they dont work, you remove them.

Some people on here will say its a bad wasteful attitude which is true, but theres so many varieties of plants. Youre bound to have ones which dont work.

Ive had easy to keep plants die, and medium difficulty ones thrive... So now im just going on what i like the look of.

Edit: but do bear in mind that there are plants out there that will require special lighting, ferts, co2 etc. So its worth still checking that
