I am setting up my 55 gal tank for GBR and after a water change and using a water softening pillow I put in a ph product by Aquarium Pharmaceuticals called Proper PH 7.0. I used the correct dosage of 1 scoop(included with product) for every 10 gallons. After 4 hrs the ph is bang on at 7.0. I tested with 2 different ph testers. Is it normal for the aquarium to be cloudy after use of this product, and if it is for how long. It has cleared somewhat. I have checked ammonia -0, nitrite-0, nitrate-10 ppm levels are where they were before the water change as the only thing that changed is the use of the softening pillow and the Proper PH 7.0 product. And do you think it would be OK to add a few fish to the tank so they keep the bacteria alive in the filters. The tank is fully cycled, I have kept troheus in there for a year. I moved the tropheus to a 120 gal tank. I kept the same substrate, filters on it(xp3 and a AC 110)and most of the decorations. I did a water change and wanted to get my ph to 7 so I had a place to start. I have boiled some african driftwood to leach out some of the colour and plan to attach some live plants to it. My ph out of the tap is 8.2 perfect for Africans but not so much for GBR's. I don't plan on using this product all the time, as I said I just wanted a place to start at. Any water that I add from during my water changes will be set at 7.0 before it is added to the tank. I was just wondering how long does the tank stay cloudy, and is it safe to put fish in while it is clearing up so I don't loose my cycle.

Thanks in advance

Sounds like a bacteria bloom. Keep an eye on your ammonia levels, they are probably creeping up. Its quite normal in a new tank, usually after 24hours it clears.

Whats your Kh levels at ? It always makes me nervous messing with Ph, as if your buffer is low it will just crash again anyway. Changing Ph is really NOT as simple as adding Ph7.

The Proper PH 7.0 was a 1 time use to get my tanks ph at a 7.0 starting point. I did not know that it would cloud the tank as it did. My Gh and kh are high so I know I would be using my water on a constant basis. I used half of my existing tank water with my filters etc so i would not loose my cycle and have to start the cycle over again. The other half was bottled water. In the future water changes will be accomplishesd with water from a friends house, whose water is much better suited for GBR's. I had hoped to have more time than I did to get the tank ready, but a group fish order went ahead about 1 week sooner than expected. My fish showed up and I had to house them. The ph increased a bit from the 7.0 late yersterday morning to 7.2 early this morning. I rechecked it again about 15 mins ago and it remains the same. I have enough ro water to do at least 2 more 30% water changes. the stocking level is fairly small for a 55 gal 2 rubber lipped plecos and 6 small 1 inch rams. My big concern was the cloudyness of the water and was it safe to put the fish in the tank.
My ammonia, nitrate and nitrite readings are fine. the tank has cleared dramaticly since yesterday. I do plan to check into a CO2 system of some sort in the not too distant future. Thank you for your reply it is appreciated.
