hey everyone i am thinking about getting a syno, please look at my signiture for the tank and fish i have already, i want a syno or plec that doesnt get bigger than a max of 10cm, smaller would be better, and i want to get two of them as i dont like keeping species on their own. they would also have to get on with all the other fish and frogs i have.
Thanks
Any ideas welcome
Cheers x x

Hi,

The smallest syno i can think of which should be fine with your current fish is the upside down catfish synodontis nigriventris they grow 4 inches and should be kept in groups of 3+.

For a small plec the otocinclus would be ideal they grow 2 inches long and should be in groups of 3+ If you want something bigger a bristlenose plec will grow between 4 and 6 inches and you could have one on its own or a pair of male and female or 2 females. Other options, pit bull plec which is like a big oto, rubber nose plec which grows around the same size as a bristlenose.

Have a look on www.planetcatfish.com in the catelogue for more ideas.

hey going to look at some upside down catfish tommorow, not getting any yet though! anyone got any info on them? would they go well in the tank i have (see Signiture). would it be better to get 2 or 3? also any ideas on other plecs/ synos i could get (see first post) thanks x x x

I don't have that particular species but they like groups. They are nocturnal (The only exceptions to this seem to be the Petricolas. Mine are out in the day quite happily.) and like places to hide. They like the tank temp to be around 24C and are very hardy. Higher temps can make them sluggish. Since my Eupterus have moved into my 100g they're far less active and the temp in there is just a smidge too higher then previously.
If you're after a more colourful variety of syno both the multipunctatious and Petricola are wonderful. Although the multi's are true nocturnals and object to daylight in is varying forms. Mine do come out if the room light is on tho after their light is out.
Another beauty is the Clarius. They have red tails. A little shy but beautiful to see and get on well with other synos.
Hugs,
P.

A warning about the nigrivenris, if you have a lot of rockwork you will almost never see them when the lights are on. I have four in my 150g and I love them to death, but the only time I get to see them is when I feed them with the room lights on and the lights off on the tank.

Petricola would be a good alternative.

thanks for reply
i will look up some info on this species now! (petricola)

pets. are the best small symo EVER.males 3+" females 4-".very day active.best kept in groups of 2+.bottom feeders.stay on bottom and sides of tanks.

I would get 3-5 Syno nigriventris or Petricola, they would do fine in your tank if you have rocks or wood for them to hide in.
