Just toying with idea of increasing the surface area in my fluval 2 to get more bacteria in there. At work we use small glass fragments (anti bumping granules) which are inert and not sharp etc. Wondering whether I could make some sort of sack for them and fill the inner space in the cartridge? Any ideas on what I could make the sack out of. Could buy a carbon sack and empty the carbon out or the other idea would be to use a section out of a set of tights???

What d'ya all think??? :)

Panty hose would work well, just make sure the part you use doesn't have any runs or holes in it.

Ok the main reason for doing this is that in the 10 gal tank the nitrite levels can go up rapidly, I've been doing 15% water changes 1-3 times weekly at the moment so I'm hoping that by increasing the amount beneficial bacteria in the tank should help. I've used an old set of tights and filled it with the anti bumping granules (aluminium oxide I think) and crammed it into the filter. Flow rate hasn't been affect much (fluval 2 plus has indicator) so I'll let you know how it goes, hopefully after a couple of weeks there should be some improvement???
