I have a 75 gallon tank running 2 Marineland Penguin 350 HOB filters. it is currently stocked with 1 oscar a Pacu 1 buenos ares tetra and pink kissing gourami. the Pacu has ate 9 of the tetras 2 rubberlipped plecos and 5 cory cats that i had in the tank and killed my other oscar. therefore has grown very big and is outgrowing the tank. if i were to trade him in would a group of Bolivian rams survive with the Oscar who has had to become aggressive himself just to survive the pacu? if they can i would be willing to add another Oscar and some schooling fish but deep down i would just assume set my tank up to focus on my favorite fish the bolivian rams with a couple different large groups of schooling fish with lots of plants and lots of activity rather than 1 large fish and a bunch of food swimming around for that 1 fish lol.

oh by the way the Pacu was my fiances idea. the tank was originally set up with 2 oscars/10 Buenos ares tetras/ 2 Plecos and 5 Cory cats. until one day i come home from work to see a pacu and the Kissing gourami.

here are some pics. i have taken all the plants out because we are in the process of moving into our new house we just bought. so i just have the 2 large pieces in there at the moment.

Hello mate, well firstly rehome the pacu at any cost...they esp blacks grow HUGE, it will probally grow to atleast 3 foot if not more .

Then also oscar will probally eat the bueno aries tetra, you tank is ideal for one oscar and maybe another tank mate, do not get bolivian rams as they will be dinner for oscar..

look at something like tbar cichlid/convict cichlids/birchirs/festivums/rainbow cichlids, list goes on

I want to get rid of all the fish we currently have except for the one tetra and just restock the tank. maybe i can talk my fiance into bringing her 75 gallon tank out of storage for the Oscar and i can get my bolivians for my 75 lol. i Knew Bolivians could not be housed with the oscar i was just kind of hoping they could haha.

I understand the importance of getting rid of the Pacu. wich is why i didnt want it to begin with. i wonder if our local zoo would take it in despite being so small compared to the big boys they have there now. im just hoping i can talk her into getting rid of the pacu. she is one of those people who worked at a pet store and think they know everything about how to care for animals. so im hoping i can convince her to get rid of it the right way instead forcing myself to plan B behind her back.

These were my last 2 Bolivian tanks i had a few years ago. both were 20 gallon tanks. 1 with albino Giant danios and the other with Neon tetras with 3 bolivians in each tank

those 2 tanks look good though i disagree with 3 rams in a 20g

what were u planning to stock the 75g with? like did u have a more detailed idea of stocking i mean

OH MY GOSH you have another tank in storage??? Set that tank up and do a peacful community with your rams.

If i can talk my Fiance out of getting rid of the Pacu and Oscar i would stock the 75 with the following:

5-10 Bolivian rams(depending on the advice given here)
3-4 Dwarf Gouramis
10 Buenos Ares tetras
15-20 Bloodfin Tetras
3-4 Rubberlipped Plecos

All together i have:
2 75 gallon tanks
2 20 gallon tall tanks
1 20 gallon long
1 10 gallon tank

all are in storage except the one 75 because we just dont have room for the others in the apartment we are in now. but we just bought a house and move into it this sunday! so im hoping we will have room to put up the other 75 somewhere. and sell the others to help stock the spare 75 gallon tank.

I once planned a massive Pacu tank drew up plans for a building and everything hah, they really are beautiful fish. To your credit though you have given them as much swimming space as possible so good job on that :)

Your stock plans for the 75, it looks okay but a few things to consider. First the Buenos Ares Tetras, they get as big as your feature fish like the dwarf gourami and rams. Which leads onto the next thought, the fish you have picked are a nice South American fish biotope apart from the dwarf gourami so I was just thinking if you swapped your dwarf gourami for some festivums. While none of those are things that will effect the health of the fish or tank its just a thought about aesthetics, but then again thats down to personal preference.

well the good news is my fiance is going to let me do whatever i want to the fish tank and if we have room in the new house set up the 2nd 75 gallon tank. the downside is i have to have a Pink bathroom in our new house:(

i went yesterday to my favorite of the Pet stores around here. a guy who breeds his own cichlids and does not sell any of the monster fish such as the pacu. he said he would take the oscar but the bad news is he cant take the pacu. he said it grows to big and he wont have room for it wich is expected. he had about 10 full grown oscars he has rescued. so the only other option i have is calling the local zoo to see if they would take it. i hope they do because i dont want to be inhumane to this beautiful fish.

this guy can get any cichlid i want and in his store he has the Bolivian rams i want. he also has Blue acara festivums uara and all kinds of other cichlids. i was curious about adding some Angels in with the Bolivians rather than the Gouramis or Festivums? but after seeing the festivums live yesterday in his store they would go very well with the Bolivians.

if i have room for the 2nd 75 gallon tank ill probably set it up for some firemouths or keep it for the oscar we have currently.

where are you located?

That sounds brilliant having a local fish shop that can get hold of any cichlid you want, even the rarer types? that would be so amazing, i have to do long hard searchs and reply on deliverys for rarer and hard to get types of fish...your lucky then :hyper:

If you tell me where you located i will think of the top of my head who i know that knows someone in that area, there is a guy in america,he is also a memeber on here,he takes in monster tank busters then either keeps them in his tanks or rehomes with his contacts and boy he knows quite a few rescuee's would wide :good:

Keep us updated on what happens to the pacu? I would like to know how that goes.

Ps festivums are one of the best fish I have ever kept they are right behind severums in my list of top 5. I have 3 and they are so cute and fun to watch but eat plants.
