Any one have any suggestions as to a type of algae eater that I can get to keep some of the algea at bay I have one lage Pleco at the moment and I have tried a smaller pleco and two Flying foxes but all three have been eaten. most probale by the ghost or knife fish. ;)

How big is the knife fish?

They will likly eat any fish that will fit in its mouth! Which kinda limits your choice of algae eaters

You've allready tried flying foxes - how big were these?

The best for eating algae are ottos and SAE's and the FF all of which will probably be too small unless you can get an older/bigger SAE or FF or maybe another plec?

Hope that helps unless someones got more suggestions -

:)

the ghost fish are about 34 cm long I have 2 of them and the flying foxes were about 6-7cm long. excuse my ingnorence but what are ottos and SAE's and the FF's ?

Sorry luma there abriviations cos I'm a lazy typer.

Ottos - otocinclus (usually affinis), stay very small but do a great job

SAE's - Siamese algae eater (similar to FF's)

FF's - what you had, flying foxes

:)

With the knife fish that big I think you'll be out of luck with all the above.

Have you tested for phosphate and nitrAte? High levels will promote algae growth.

And what about your lighting period or any direct sunlight?

:)
