I have just found this site. It may be of use to someone setting up a new tank.

No doubt a place like that can help a bit with making sound gravel judgments. I have always used the simple thumb rule that a reasonable depth of substrate takes about 1 pound of substrate for each gallon of tank volume. Using the calculator I got 47 pounds for typical 55 gallon dimensions so I will judge it reasonably close as calculators go. Personally, I find that I always know the capacity of a new tank and find that 1/1 ratios are very easy to work with. If I buy a 29 gallon tank, I buy 30 pounds of substrate, call it 15 Kg, and am fairly confident that things will work out for me.

Wow there are A LOT of numbers on that page!

I like how it gives a length option in miles or nanometers and weight in tonnes!
