Whenever you buy a dechlorinator (or any additive for that matter), always read what is in the bottle and if the ingredients are vague or list any unnamed plant extracts or actual named extracts such as Tee Tree or Aloe Vera, leave it on the shelf and walk away

Tee Tree destroys the labrynth organ of surface breathing fish such as the Gourami and Betta, once damaged it never recovers and will eventually suffocate the fish.

Aloe Vera hangs in the water, slowly building up over time and with each water change where it is used and coats the gills, gradually blocking them and suffocating the fish.

Unfortunately unlike human and other animal additives and medications, those used in fishkeeping are not legally required to list all ingredients or the ingredient percentages on the packet. So the manufacturers can put absolutely anything in that bottle regardless of its ability to either do the job that it is bought for or if it actually kills the very fish that you bought it to treat in the first place.

If you get really stuck or unsure about any additive...ask on here cos you can bet that someone will have experience of the product and be able to confirm if it is actually safe and if it works or not.

As several members have correctly mentioned in this thread, the negative side effects of many additives are far more dangerous than the initial issue you want to treat.
