UPDATE: sorry for the premature new thread, I found another thread on here with photos of what looks to be the same substance in our tank.

I set up a 5 gallon Fluval Spec for my wife's Berta a few days ago and this is the first tank we've had with all natural plants. This morning I noticed what looked almost like fog lingering near the plants on top of the sand, I also noticed an oily film on the surface of the water. When I tried to remove the "fog" it was almost like a slime, very sticky and stringy, it even pulled up sand with it as I removed it. Is this normal for new plants? It just seemed very strange to me. It only appeared near the roots of our anubias and crypt plants.
