I hope someone can help one of my cardinal tetras has 2 strange yellow fleshy lumps on its side they almost look like zits. The fish is acting normally and is eating. Does anyone know what these could be.

Water parameters are

Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
nitrate <10

I've taken a picture but unfortunately its not that great

Hard to tell from the picture, best guess is lymphocystis, a non-fatal virus that generally has to run its course. Best thing to do is move the fish to a quar tank, this generally takes about 4 weeks to clear up. Keep up on water changes, as when the cysts do drop off they will leave a slight wound. This is contagous to other fish, thus the use of the quar tank, but just unsightly more than anything.

A more clear picture would help, if you can't provide this do an image search for lymphocystis, see if any of the pictures look similar.

Thanks for your reply, I dont think i can get a better photo as only have my iphone and the one I posted was the best of about 30 that I tried to take. I've looked at some image of lymphocystis, I'm not sure if that is it or not as the images that come up on google are either big fluffy white lumps or red sores, the lumps on my tetra are more yellow.

If it is lymphocystis is there anything I can do to prevent it spreading? Any treatments? As I dont have a quarantine tank unfortunately?

Thanks

Steve

I had something that sounds very similar on two of my false neons a while back. I never did pin down what it was, but a course of Myxazin sorted it out.

Being viral there is no treatment. A quar tank doesn't have to be a tank, a plastic bin works quite well.

I've only been keeping fish 6 months so have no spare heater or filter to use in a quarantine tank. My dad has one set up at his house i'll see if I can transport the tetra over there.

Thanks

Steve
