I have some Geophagus that are being a bit wierd. I have a pot in their tank which today two of them seem to have taken a shine to.

One is inside the pot only coming out to chase anything too close away (only comes out as far as it's head and goes back in) and the other is doing the same above the pot. They've been at this all day
The one above the pot protecting the top has developed a thick black band that runs the legnth of its body through it's black spot and the other seems to have breeding tube stuff on show.

Strange thing is though that the only time they move from their posts is if they catch sight of each other and decide to have a scrap :S

Anybody know what they are doing?

I've added some pics just to show what I mean

pairing off and spawning

I would of loved to have thought that but they really do beat each other up if they catch sight of each other

i totally agree, they are spawning, i have a pair of Geo's and they have paired up, but mine are mouth brooders. if you manage to look in the pot then you may find eggs, and it sounds like the male is outside to pot also protecting there nest,

congrats, keep us posted and update with pics

Hmmmmm...I'm gonna have to investigate this pot. Though I am not too optimistic about what I may find

EDIT: Had a good look at the pot and no eggs

Well as an update the situation is still the same.
One inside and one on top. The one inside the pot has now dug a huge pit under a overhanging plant next to the pot.

Wierdly though! A third Geophagus has now come along and removed all of the sand from the back corner of the tank right behind the pot and is guarding it with its life from anything

George and mildred seem to be guarding the gutter piping under the bogwood now also.

Its quite a busy time for flaring and lunging all in all
