I have a 55g with 1/2 grown Mbunas (2-3") - around 12. I recently set up a 100g and stocked with 17 juvenile Mbunas. My plan is to introduce the larger ones into the 100g. Should I introduce a few at a time or all 12 at once? I want to avoid a killing field situation.
The types are
  • juvies (100g) - red zebras, maingano, socolofi, exaspeatus, damasoni
  • teens (55g) - yellow labs, OB zebra, cobalt zebra, acei

I have other plans for the 55g, so need to get the teens out of there.

If the new tank is up and running and can support the bio load of another 12 cichlids I’d maybe try and introduce all at once to create confusion and avoid aggression or maybe 2 groups of 6 a couple of days apart , 30 in a 100g seems a lot tho

Thanks for the reply! Everything I've researched and "experts" LFS guy that has kept mbunas for years indicate that 30-40 should be fine in a 100g. I'm not planning on going over the 30 mark with them. My filtration should be fine. Running a 2217 on it now. I was thinking the 6/6 method might be good. I tried to give the smaller ones a chance to acclimate to the tank before putting in the big boys, to try to give them some advantage.
