The main issue with this fish (any of the varieties of the blue ram) is their need for higher temperatures that will burn many other fish out. Temp at or above 82F/28C really limits options for tankmates.
Stocking idea for 40-55 gallon.

Well, they are options in the cichlid line.
German blue rams are a fit in the sense that they would fit in a 40 breeder fine; however they require warm temps (82-84) AND are not a beginners fish. It is quite easy to kill them. Therefore I would recommend that you refrain from them until you have a bit more experience.
