hi

ive got a very stinky tank and i cant seem to get the smell out of it.

all the fish in are alive, and look heathy at the moment

So far ive dont 2 water changes, one 25% water change, cleaned out the filter ( that done nothing) then early this morning i did a 80% water change, gravel vac, took all the decoratios out cleaned them.

and still the pong is there.
there are no live plants in my tank.

any suggestions should i wait a nother day do a 90/100% change, put the fish in an easkey and scrub the main one out

i havent got nother tank i can put my fish, the other its too small it only holds bout 4 gallons

I wouldn't recommend doing more than a 40% water change your going to restart the cycling in your tank not to mention with an 80% water change you must have had to net your fish and place them else.

What are your water parameters?

Can you describe the smell if it smells kind of like wet grass and trees after a rain then tank usually smell like that normally?

Pick up the hood of your tank and clean for rotting food and gunk. I usually do that once a week and the tanks smells very fresh.

the smell is more of a bad fart ( a little eggy i guess like theres something dead in there), the ph is 7.5, which is a little higher then usual but not much i usually try to keep it at 7. i was only guessing 80%, what i did was grav vac it then i moved all the gravel to one corner and took out as much as i could so that the fish still had 5 or 6 cm covering them. the water treamant stuff is bout 3 years old now, that stuff doesnt go out of date does it, no use by date on it?

A water change > 40% will not start a cycle, esp if he took care to make sure his filter remained submerged in what water was left and it would help if he filled it back up as soon as possible. So long as he treats the water he puts back in he should be fine.

Now the stink.... is it a earthy soil smell or does it smell foul?

eggy smell normaly means the dechlorinator is out of date...

have you checked around behind the tank/ it could be a rotting fish somwhere

i feel the same... my salt water tank smells like salt but its extrem smell, my whole room!!

One of my tanks is also a smelly one! To me it smells like stagnant pond water - but it's not stagnant at all in reality, it's clean, the test readings are all fine (apart from a high PH but that is to do with the water in our area and my other tanks do not smell).

The chap who comes round to maintain my tanks said he thinks it's to do with the type of gravel I have in that tank. It is a white gravel - not sure if it's coral or not. What type of gravel do you have in yours? Having said that, I did use a different type of water conditioner in that tank so it could have been that.

He did a 25% water change last week and vacuumed the gravel but the smell still persists.

Whatever it is causing it, it's horrible. Will be interested to see if you manage to rectify the problem in your tank.

Remember to check the topic date, this one is almost 4 years old. I'm sure the smell is gone, or the fish are dead by now.
