is there an easy way to sex them,i have 1 and i plan to put it in a 38g w/some H.lifalili but i only want a pair of each in there :/
it's about 2 1/2"s and i noticed that his dorsal fin is long (past his tail)is that any indication?

that is one way to guesstimate by the fins, egg spots and nuchal humps. males are usually either more colorful, have longer flowing fins, numerous egg spots or nuchal humps. the only effective way to sex a fish is to vent it. cichlidmaster is the espert on this and can tell you how to do it. never tried it myself.

Hi
I am no expert on african fish, but from what I can find...

The doninant males will develope a large hump. Lesser males and females will not have such a large hump

Hope this s of some help.

all information is useful thanks dolphin,so far mine is looking like a male(HUGE HUMP) and if attitude is any indication  IT A BOY!!!!

like i said the hump and longer fins are an indicator that it may be a male, but females in captivity will also develop the nuchal hump. the nuchal hump is a good indicator of the age of the fish though. sa/ca's that develop the nuchal hump usually do after about a year. the hump is a storage of fat that for some reason the fish collects in it's head.

Hi Mostanks

Do you live in the UK. If so there is a nice pic of a pair of blockheads on page 16 of the June issue of PFK.

:hi: You can also see my advert for Angel Paradise, sellign Brine shrimp eggs on page 126. (nothing like blowing your own trumpet).
