Starting fresh water tank with sponge from turtle tank?

I am starting up a fresh water tank and i have access to a filter from a existing turtle tank. Would the bacteria be the same and help kickstart my new tank?

It should work fine? I doubt the bacteria in water inhabited by a turtle are going different from the beneficial bacteria from a freshwater aquarium. My concern would anything else hitchhiking on the sponge. Hopefully someone more experienced with these guys will come along.
