Ok planted peeps, i've got my tank pretty much setup but i've still got a few issues i'd like to at least understand so any advice appreciated.

The tank:

seabreeze1.jpg

Starting from left to right i have

hygrophila polysperma
Hygrophila rosae australis

cryptocoryne wendtii green x 2

On the wood i have Java Fern and Windelov i think its called.

Amazon swords x 2

More cryptocoryne wendtii green

A tonne of vallis.

Anubias nana on wood and some offcuts of a crypt.

The tank is 400 litres, i have two tetratec ex1200's and two hydor nano 900l/p circulation pumps. It all sits under 2 x T5 Tropical 58W lights. Light are on for 6 hours a day, Co2 from fire extinguisher is diffused by ladder at the back of the tank, also on for 6 hours a day staggered by 2 hours. Thats pumping out at roughly 4/5 bubbles a sec at the moment, struggling to get a lime green colour but not 100% sure if thats necessary as long as its stable? I dose TPN+ weekly, about 50ml after i do a 40%-50% water change.

Firstly, the Hygro's both seem to struggle and i get some leaf loss caused by the kribs and the odd tiger barb nom noming on them. The australis has only been in there two weeks now and is looking pretty limp.

The Windelov basically seems to be dying off, leaves go dark, covered in brown/black crud and i tear them off. The large Java fern seems to "survive" but again leaves getting a little manky. The crypts are doing "ok" but they develop a dark sheen on them, which seems to be diatoms and/or no particular algae i can identify. I give the leaves a rub with my fingers from time to time. The Swords were rescued from my old tank, i stripped them down to 4/5 big leaves and although its trying to grow new leaves, the poxy fish eat them.

The vallis is growning well, but it does seem to develop darkened tips on some stems, not all. I occasionally have to pluck out a dead light yellow piece now and again.

Anubias grows but leaves get the brown crud growing on them.

While i appreicate some of the plants are going to get chomped on, i'd like to know what i can do about the browning of the leaves, i'm a bit anal and want my green plants to stay green :>

The two nano circulation pumps are my latest edition, i should be around the x10 mark now on circulation, im hoping that this to some degree sorts it out.

Any advice on an alternative plant to create a wall on the left of the tank appreicated, as im not sure these two are going to make it! (I want to avoid cabomba, disgusting plant imo)

Cheers!

went mad with CO2 this weekend, was a real effort to get a lime green and still didnt manage it, i think the ladder wastes a lot of Co2, so im going to just leave it as is for the time being until i can afford the inline diffuser next month. bleh.

I swear my vallis is on steroids, another dozen bits grew to the surface over this weekend alone.

Looks great.
You'll see a great benefit with the inline diffuser.

EI would be more cost effective on your tank and would rule out any nutrient deficiency. I think the TPN+ isnt adding enough, especially if added only once or twice a week.

I caved in, inline diffuser and bubble counter purchased, delivery tomorrow :)

I'll have a look into EI dosing if i get a chance this afternoon, if anyone can make any suggestions where to get the stuff from that would be ace.

Here you go mate, http://www.aquariumplantfood.co.uk/featured/ei-starter-kit.html

Looks brill, must take your barbs about 50 secs to swim to other end! :p

Keep it up pal!

Beginnings of a nice looking tank that.

Dosing TPN+ must be costing you a fortune. There was a thread about making up your own TPN recipe on here awhile ago.

When you say wall on the left, do you mean at the back behind the Java Fern? (which looks really good. It's going to take ages to get to look like that)

Well im only on my first bottle of TPN+ and yeah, im half way through it now, using it pretty quickly!

I'm going to get the kit L_plates linked once its run out.

I was hoping to get the Hygrophila's to grow up the left hand wall of the tank as best i could, bit like a hedge row but its really not liking life in my tank.

I've pondered the idea of a cabomba type plant but not cabomba itself, i have to admit to really disliking the stuff. Always rots at the base and seems to polute the tank. Just need to look into alternatives if the Hygrophila doesnt pick up.

Make sure you keep hold of the empty bottle of TPN+ when it runs out. This will help when making up batches of the dry ferts mate. I have 4 bottles filled up so when 2 run out i have the next 2 ready to go.

Cool will do.

Inline diffuser and bubble counter just arrived so i'll get those fitted tonight, although the bubble counter fitting looks a little small! bleh
