Just nipped to the LFS this morning and they had some nice new fish in, some of which I'd not seen before.

Black Emperor Tetra

Labelled as 'Peacock Killifish'. Photo does not do them justice. Anyone know anything about these?

Black Harlequin Rasboras and some deep blue tetras I'd not heard of before (forgot what they were labelled as)

Finally some really big, beautiful adult rainbows

I was like a kid in a sweet shop but resisted temptation.

i noticed some Blue teras at my local LFS, the other day. Some nice fish coming through at the min!

The 'Peacock Killifish' is actually a Nothobranchius guentheri, an African Killifish (annual species so lives for less than a year.
My LFS had Yellow Phantom Tetra and Gold Cardinal Tetra

Its nice when you see adult fish sometimes.

The Killifish as already mentioned is the Africian annual species GUE (Nothobranchious guentheri)

Had a feeling they might be annual. Nice fish but for £12 a pair don't think I'll be getting them.

Beautiful species, I LFS used to have these for an expensive £7 each/£14 for a pair of them, then I went to another LFS and they were being sold for £2.40 each. So quite a difference in prices

£12 a pair Gosh. I must sell your LFS some Rachovii their bound to get atleast £20 LOL
That is very, very expensive for GUE M8, what a cheek.

I'd be happy to pay that for a pair if they lived longer (and I had the tank space). Colours were absolutely fantastic.

You can get Nothobranchious eggs on ebay on ebay for quite cheap prices, incase anyones interested :D

Colours were absolutely fantastic.
Most killi sp. usually are m8 hence the attraction.
The reasons why you dont see them in dealers tanks too often is because of water conditions, specialist diets, skewed sex ratios and territorial tendencies.
Most LFS acquire stock from local breeders, they offer them a pittance or credit note for their efforts and then hike the prices to unsuspecting buyers. We breeders make no profit from killifish what we sell usually only covers costs.
It is also true that the breeder will have kept the best of the batch for his subsequent breeding program so needless to say what you saw in the tanks were not the best looking or most robust fish in that particular batch.

Fair enough, the 'studs' must be mind blowing then

I was quite suprised to see these today as like you said, they don't turn up in dealers tanks too often. I've got a big group of lampeyes in my smaller tank but other than that I've no experience with killis at all. Shame because they're some of the most colourful fish in the hobby and it sounds like you breeders are getting a rough deal.

I like that killifish
In all these years I;ve never kept one and don;t really see them for sale

Ah every hobby costs M8 no matter what game your into that's just par for the course.
What you make in one hand usually goes out in the other.
By the time you rear a batch of fry to maturity with all that goes with that then your looking at a loss if you wish to view things in those terms. Fish breeding is no get rich quick scheme LOL. Maybe for the large Asian fish-farms but not for us garden shed brigade.
Annuals would present you with possibly the easiest and fastest return as they mature very quickly.
On a personal level I get more satisfaction (on occasions) from giving away some pairs to young interested parties who stick with them.
