When I first planted my new aquarium, I noticed a small snail in the tank ;) . I thought this must be beneficial as it would surely clean the tank. But since then they have multiplied and people have told me that they are in fact bad for the tank  . I was told that clown loach would get rid of them and I wanted to add some anyway. Is this true? and are snails really a problem?

Large numbers of 'pest' snails can become a problem. However, if they are kept under control, they provide a helpful service by eating rotting vegetation and algae. I have moderate numbers in all my tanks. If the population gets a bit much, I pull out a number until I am satisfied.

Clown loaches are good for dealing with snails, but remember they can reach 30cm/1' or more.

HTH :)
