I appear to have aquired snails not sure if there ramshorn or apple snails(probably from plants). Now i'm currently doing my fishless cycle so would i be best to deal with them now before i introduce fish or should i leave them be. I was concidering introducing trumpet snails as i have sand substrate and have heard them digging about during day is a good thing but have also heard that they can become overpopulated and become a real pest.

Secondly if i fishlessly cycle a quarantine tank once it's completed can i keep adding a maintenance dose of ammonia to keep the tank cycled while empty and how much should this maintenance dose be or is there a better way of doing this ?

For your snails question, they will survive the cycle. Secondly I find trumpet snails a real help and I think they add something to the tank. You can get assassin snails to help eliminate the trumpets if they get too much.

On your quarantine question, you can add an extra piece of sponge inside your main tanks filter and then just take it out ant put in the quarantine tank when needed.

I wasn't so much wondering if they would survive as to whether i should kill them. Can someone ask an admin to delete my multi post not sure how it happened but can't find a way to delete my own posts or contact an admin. Nice idea on the sponge.

I am new to all of this but got snails in my tank. One day I had one then the next I found 11. I'd recommend removing them when you see them or squishing them. And set up a snail trap, get a peice of lettuce or cucumber, anchor it down with stones and place a jam jar over it with a gap where the snails can get into the food. Over night or within a few hours (in the dark) the snails may go ther for a snack, then pick them out.

I did quite bit of research, if you dont take control now they will over run your tank, snails self fertilise so just one and you can have babies. Also I researed assassin snails and the theory is you could be replacing one snail with another.

Good Luck. x
