help!!! please, i have a new tropical tank and filled it up etc cleaned everything etc, started the cycle now and fine then today i opened my tank and oh my god the smell like dead rotting smell  dont know what it is . i have no fish as of yet (65litres)

any suggestions on what this could be ?? and how to solve it ??

thanks :good:

Are you adding pure ammonia?

If this is the case fear not, it will smell until your a-bacs have built enough numbers to process the ammonia you've added. And then it will smell no more. The same thing happened to me when I started my cycle but within a few days there was no scent at all.

I wouldn't worry about it if you don't have fish, mine smelt during cycling. The smell should be gone before you add fish though.

The smell does go away but ive discovered you don't have to wai for the cycle my fish do fine without running it (Ive only done it with bigger more healthy fish) so i wouldnt try it with a danio ;). But the smell goes away. AND another smell comes when you do get fish so have fun cleaning the tank!

^ Are you suggesting they do a cycle using fish?
I don't remember if my tanks smelt during fishless cycling but I do remember it taking over 3 weeks to settle down to take fish safely. Thankfully I can seed new filters from my other filters now. Ammonia naturally smells (think how much the first pee of the morning can smell....it's ammonia) and it should disappear once the bacteria takes care of it. In the meantime, keep a window open a bit to take the smell out. :good:
