help!!! please, i have a new tropical tank and filled it up etc cleaned everything etc, started the cycle now and fine then today i opened my tank and oh my god the smell like dead rotting smell  dont know what it is . i have no fish as of yet (65litres)

any suggestions on what this could be ?? and how to solve it ??

thanks :good:

if you have live plants i supspect they are dead giving off a terrible smell, if its not plants i dont know

What are you using to cycle the tank? If you have gone with the fish food or prawn method, your nose is just telling you that you are being successful. The organics you placed into the tank are now rotting.

Some bacteria,or dead/rotting plants give off bad smell,Algae also smells quite bad but not like a dead rotting smell
if its used tank maybe someone put something else gross in it before

When I first set up my tank I used to add Filter Start which is supposed to be a bacterial aid to cycling. I used this stuff for a couple of weeks and the tank smelt so bad I could smell it when I was upstairs !! once I discontinued it's use the smell went. May have been a coincidence though (don't wanna get sued by Interpet lol)

hi , cheers to everyone thats commented and offered advice i think this site and all members are awsome and only here 4 a day lol, anyway i phoned the owner of the tank before me and she said she had a snail problem in the tank so i cleaned it out poured boiling water over gravel and cleaned it hopefully no more smells !! :D
