I'm wondering if there is any fish other than a betta that would have similar requirements for tank size, food, filtration etc. I basically want to have the smallest fish possible in the smallest tank possible, while still being able to have a healthy fish. I think betta's are probably the fish most often kept in the smallest tanks. I'v had bettas in 2.5 gallons, but i want something different for a change. Is there any other type of very small fish that could be kept in a 2.5, or better yet an even smaller tank? Or maybe not even a fish, how about a frog or something, i'v never had a frog. what do they eat?

also, does any one kow of any sites that will let you search for fish based on tank size, i have had a horrible time finding one.

thanx in advance :)

I think an african dwarf frog or two would be ok in a 2.5g (provided adequate filtration/cleaning of course)

or some shrimp....

I wouldn't repsonally put any other fish in that small a tank as it wouldnt have enough space to swim around and also such a small volume could be quite unstable :/ IMO although there are fish that could live in such a tank, tehy would not be truly happy. i expecct everyone will disagree with me though :)

may i ask why you're so set on having a small tank? in just a slightly bigger one, you could have a nice little community of happy fish :)

i agree with clutterydrawer. fish need some space to be happy. I have never had a beta and I've heard that they do prefer smaller spaces. couldn't you at least get a 5 or 7g? I have 7g right on my kitchen counter and it's not too big at all. They only cost like 5-10 dollars and you could put 3 or 4 guppies in there.
good luck!

personally out of my three betta tanks two have drawf frogs. I've had them together for some time now and they seem to get along, pardon the pun, swimmingly. I tried keeping two dwarf frogs in the same tank before but they were a bit to aggressive not to mention feeding them flake vs giving them blood worms is a bit more time consuming.

yeah i'm in a dorm room and i'm not allowed to have fish, so it would have to be hidden. I think water changes to a 10 gallon might arouse suspicion. Also I'm in a single dorm room so it is literally the size of a walk-in closet. Thats why i wanted a really small one.

I really miss having fish, but y'all are probably right about it just not working with the small tank. It just seems like there would be SOME kind of really tiny fish out there. I might get another betta, i just wanted some variety

pygmy cories exist but at require a shoal of at least six, that's six inches of fish total, so i think a 10 would be minimum...basically there are lots of tiny fish, but the fact that they're tiny doesn't mean they cn trhive ina tiny tank. :(

i think you should stick with betta/frog/shrimp kaley :( unless you can persuade the Powers That Be that a small tank would be an ok plan. ;) maybe you could get a 5g tank? then you'd only have to change, say, four litres once a week, which shouldn't be *too* hard to conceal...

you should read up on african dwarf frogs though, they are cute little guys. you have my sympathy cos I'm not allowed as big a tank as i'd like, either. (parents!) let us know how it works out. :)

I think 2g are hard to keep up. I have a couple for fry and it requires a lot more attention. why not gups in a 5g? I should take a pic for you so you can see. where are you? cuz i have an extra 5g that i never use.

Hi kaley822 :)

I would like to suggest getting 2 African Dwarf Frogs. They take very little room and are quite interesting little pets.

Here's a link with information about them:

These little frogs are tiny and eat little. They need no filtration and with an occasional water change and bowl cleaning they will do just fine.

I keep two in a one gallon jar that originally held Hellman's mayonnaise. The delis use this size and will often give them to you if you ask for them. Some kinds of pickles come in these jars too. Another good feature of a jar like this would be that on school breaks you could just screw the lid on and take them home with you.

depending on the dimensions of the tank you could make an interesting little planted tank with JUST 5 pygmy corys....

I have some pygmy corys in a 3G with a betta.

Ben
